It?s good to be king

STAFF COLUMNIST
In 1999, the Committee on Women Faculty at MIT released a report claiming that there was significant gender bias at MIT. Women made up a minority of the Institute?s professorship, and on average were paid less and allotted less lab space; the report alleged this was due to a ?subtle but pervasive bias? against women at the Institute. In response, the administration began a concerted effort to recruit more women and increase the pay of female professors. They succeeded, though at the cost of convincing many that women were being given an unfair advantage.

Samsung brings Apple patent suit to US soil

Last week Samsung countersued Apple in Korea, Japan and Germany for infringements on up to five Samsung patents. The countersuit came after Apple lobbed a massive suit against Samsung for copying the iPhone and iPad. Apple wasn't pulling any punches either. "It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging. This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple's intellectual property when companies steal our ideas," a Cupertino spokesperson said.

Well, Samsung brought its patent infringement countersuit against Apple to the US yesterday. As Bloomberg reports, the new US suit expands the number of alleged patent infringements by Apple to 10. Among the alleged violations: a patent that covers improvements to text messages and their attachments, another that covers technology that allows a user to place a phone call and surf the Web at the same time, and another that allows for increased capacity of mobile networks.

How this is all going to play out is anyone's guess. All I can say with certainty is that this is a great time to be an IP lawyer.

Xoom Camera Connection Kit makes us lust for Photoshop on Honeycomb

Xoom Camera Connection Kit
Soon enough you'll be able to transfer photos from your digital camera straight to your Xoom, provided you're willing to shell out $20 for the Xoom Camera Connection Kit. We already knew that the tablet was capable of reading USB drives with a little trickery, but Motorola's upcoming update will officially unlock that functionality (albeit in a limited form). The glorified micro-USB cable isn't available online yet, but we've heard if you call Verizon and ask nicely for item number MOTMZ600ADPKIT they're more than happy to send one your way. If asking for a random series of letters and numbers seems a little strange, just pretend you're a secret agent and it's some kind of cipher -- preferably one that doesn't remind you to drink your Ovaltine.

White iPhone reportedly sells out in China

Apple kicked off sales of the white iPhone 4 yesterday and the launch in China was marked by long lines and steady sales. According to interviews from those in line, many Asian consumers passed on the black version of the handset and waited for the white variant to make its debut. Sales were so strong that the white version is reportedly sold out in Beijing, one of China's largest cities. Hong Kong sales were also brisk with reports suggesting the available stock of the white iPhone 4 sold out in one hour.

This demand for the white iPhone 4 was forecast by Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities. The analyst predicted sales of the white version would be strong in Asia where white is a desirable color. Besides delivering on a promise to launch the white iPhone 4 this spring, the launch of the white model will also keep Apple iPhone sales strong in the current quarter. Last quarter, Apple sold over 18 million iPhones globally.

LinkedIn app for Android now available

LinkedIn for Android
LinkedIn, the 'professional' social network, has finally launched an Android app. The app has previously been available in beta for a while. The final version includes support for messages, as well as a new Reconnect button, which suggests people you may know based on your profile and current connections. LinkedIn for Android obviously has all the features you'd expect, making it easy to connect with fellow LinkedIn users from your smartphone.

The app lets you post status updates, view updates from your contacts, view your contacts' profiles, add new contacts, search for LinkedIn users (this can be either limited to your contacts, or it can go through the entire user base), and respond to invitations.

LinkedIn expects to improve its Android app in future versions by adding some features that "have been heavily requested during the public Beta".

Angry Birds Rio for Symbian lands in Nokia's Ovi Store

Angry Birds Rio for SymbianAngry Birds is one franchise that sure gives new meaning to the word cross-platform. Angry Birds Rio, the latest installment in the bird-slinging series from Rovio Mobile, is now available in Nokia's Ovi Store, ready to fly to your Symbian device. Angry Birds Rio has so far been spotted on iOS, Android, and webOS.

As with the versions for all the other platforms, Angry Birds Rio for Symbian has a story that's a bit different to what fans of the franchise have seen so far. The original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to Rio de Janeiro, where they manage to escape their captors and subsequently set out to save their friends, Blu and Jewel -- two macaws that incidentally are also the stars of the movie Rio. The gameplay is mostly unchanged though, and you get two episodes right now, with more episodic updates promised, for free, in May, July, October, and November.

Angry Birds Rio is only available for devices running the 'new Symbian', also known as Symbian^3. At the moment, these are the Nokia N8, E7, C7, and C6-01.

Telus recruits Leonard Nimoy to vet your Facebook status updates

What Would Leonard Nimoy Say
Have you ever thought your Facebook status updates lacked finesse? Ever regretted saying that to the whole of Facebook about 30 seconds after hitting send? Ever wished you had your own personal Leonard Nimoy to proof read your mind-dumps before you make a fool of yourself? Yes, me too, and now you can!

Brought to you by Telus, What Would Leonard Nimoy Say (WWLNS) is a Facebook app, which allows you to run your status updates past the legendary sci-fi actor before slapping them up on Facebook. To use the app you must 'Like' it, and sacrifice your https connection if you happen to have it enabled, but that's the price you pay to have Spock proof read your inane musings.

Check out Telus on Facebook to take the app for a whirl, and jump on over to Engadget to see more Nimoy-Telus combinations.

MacLegion bundle focuses on utility, value

Mac software bundles come and bundles go -- some with an emphasis on pretty apps with limited shelf life, others with more of a gaming or business bent. It's not clear whether 'bundle fever' will still be with us well into the Mac App Store era, but depending on your needs and your timing you can still get fantastic deals from app bundles... assuming you don't already own more than half the apps.

The good news about the new US$49.99 MacLegion Spring bundle, announced today and available for two weeks, is that it's tightly focused on utilitarian apps that deliver clear and lasting value for power users (and those who aspire to become so). With no obvious clunkers in the batch (with one potential caveat, noted below), the bundle might make a good gift for the new Mac user in your life who keeps pestering you with "How do I do that?" questions.

The bundle consists of ten apps, with retail prices ranging from $20 to $99. Here's the lineup:

About that caveat: Reasonable people can disagree over whether Mac OS X users actually need antivirus protection under normal circumstances, so just because VirusBarrier X6 is included in the bundle that doesn't mean you need to install it. Given my experience with Intego's approach to marketing its products (which leans toward the sensational rather than sober assessments of security risk) I wouldn't be particularly inclined to use their app if I needed AV. Rather, I'd suggest the free ClamXAV or the free home edition of Sophos Anti-Virus.

Extending WiFi to one mile, thanks to empty TV channels

Rice University grad student Ryan Guerra is on a mission to extend the range of WiFi signals from a few hundred feet to a mile—and beyond. This month, he succeeded, thanks to some nifty engineering and a few empty TV channels.

The first beneficiary of his work is Houston resident Leticia Aguirre, 48, who lives at the very edge of a local free WiFi network run by Technology for All. The high frequencies (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) used by WiFi mean that signals don't easily penetrate the tree branches and leaves which surrounded Aguirre's home.
